Join PLEAWA for an online panel discussion with the Centre for Public Integrity (CPI). exploring how accountabiltiy works in practice across Australia's political and legal system.

The panel will feature:

    • Professor Gabrielle Appleby, Professor in the UNSW Faculty of Law and Justice and Director of the Centre for Public Integrity
    • The Hon Michael Barker KC, former judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and Federal Court of Australia, and Executive Director of the Centre for Public Integrity


    Drawing on their expertise, the panellists will consider how we can evaluate the effectiveness of different accountability mechanisms including:
    • parliamentary mechanisms of executive accountability, including Senate committees and the Auditor-General
    • merits review and the Administrative Review Tribunal
    • the accountability of Australian courts, including its relationship with judicial independence


    This discussion has been shaped by feedback from teachers and students of Politics and Law. Join us as we discuss a framework for evaluating accountability and highlight useful examples of how accountability mechanisms operate in practice.
