“Malaysia's 14th General Elections (GE14): How to (really) steal an election” Abstract The 14th Malaysian General Election (GE) will be held in the next two months, against a background of sustained controversy over alleged government corruption and conflicts over governance institutions and the uneven distribution of benefits from economic growth. In the two previous general elections held in 2008 and 2013, the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) lost significant ground and the all-important two-thirds majority required to legislate constitutional changes. In 2013, the BN also lost the popular vote. The 14th GE will even be more keenly contested given that the opposition leader now is Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister and leader of the BN. This seminar seeks to shed more light onto the dynamics and issues that surround GE 14 and what might be the long-term implications for Malaysian politics. Bio Professor James Chin is Director of the Asia Institute, University of Tasmania. He was previously the foundation Head of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University, Malaysia Campus. Prior to an academic career, he worked as a journalist in Malaysia and Singapore. |
